Overview
Jianghuai culture is a unique cultural amalgamation found in the region where the Yangtze River and Huaihe River meet, primarily in the eastern part of China. It is a synthesis of the Yangtze River culture and Huaihe River culture, characterized by its distinct historical development, architecture and cultural practices.
Qingdun Neolithic Site
Discovered and excavated in the 1970s, this site covers approximately 70,000 square meters and is the largest and best-preserved Neolithic site in the Jianghuai area. Its discovery has provided a deeper insight into the history of the region.
The site has revealed a wealth of cultural relics, including jade wares linked to the Liangzhu civilization and stilt-style architectural ruins similar to those from the Hemudu culture in Zhejiang. These findings suggest advanced techniques and cultural exchanges between different ancient societies. Items such as pottery axes, decorative patterns, carved elk antlers and charred rice highlight the technological advancements and lifestyle of the Qingdun people, indicating a sophisticated level of social organization and cultural development. The presence of elaborate tools and structures shows that the Qingdun people engaged in agriculture, fishing, hunting, and early pottery, textiles and architecture.
Jianghuai Cultural Park
The Jianghuai Cultural Park in Hai'an serves as a modern representation of Jianghuai culture. Developed by the local government and the Hai'an Suzhong Botanical Garden Development Co Ltd, the park integrates the historical and cultural heritage of the Yangtze and Huaihe river regions. This AAAA-level tourist attraction covers multiple aspects of Jianghuai culture, including its historical evolution, educational resources, folk customs and renowned figures. It is also a botanical haven, housing various native plant species and ancient trees.
Cultural and Touristic Importance
Jianghuai culture is not only a subject of academic study but also an integral part of the tourism industry. Sites like the Qingdun Ruins Museum, Jianghuai Culture Park, and other associated attractions contribute significantly to the cultural tourism appeal of the region.
